Not Dead, Just Missing

Quick update for those wondering where I am. I am in Letterkenny, Ireland and have been for the last 4 weeks. And the kicker, I have 3 weeks to go still. That's right, almost 2 months in the Emerald Isle for work. Certainly can think of worse places to work, that's for sure.

Anyway, I am alive and well and fighting my way through Leprechauns, pots of gold and 4 leaf clovers. Not too many pics yet, but I think I might have a few from my walkabout around town.

  1. Jim,

I imagine from you post that you're not thinking too much about boating right now.

When you get back, I wonder if you could review the following which, due to my unfamiliarity with how this site works, I posted in an old thread a week or two ago.

I would much appreciate any thoughts/insight etc. Many thanks in advance. Enjoy your trip.

    Best,

    Tim.

    Hi Jim,

I just found your blog and am looking forward to reading much more. However, while I have only scratched the surface, you appear to have added a bimini at some point but I can't find a discussion of it. I too have a Mk 1 Cal 34 ('67) and am very interested in doing this but think that it is somewhat challenging on Mk 1's with the main sheet at the end of the boom.

I would much appreciate more pics and or thoughts, specifics etc that you may have about this.

    Thanks in anticipation.

    Best,

    Tim.

We are in Beaufort SC right now hopeing the weather forecast stays true and we can sail offshore Sat afternoon. Since we will be so close we will have to meet up. Doug

  3. Hey Tim, sorry for the delay. Congrats on the Cal, it's a great boat and a solid platform to start from.
Oddly enough, the Bimini was the weirdest of all the projects as it occurred in about 15 mins total. The dock master and friend of mine pointed me to the loft in their workshop and in the corner was this Bimini that someone ordered for God knows what boat and never picked up after it was made.
I carried the thing down to the boat with a buddy of mine and tried it on for size. Since I have a tiller, I needed it more forward in the cockpit so I didn't have the issue of the mainsheet in the way. The thing fit perfectly if you could believe it and in 15 mins, it was installed. It was by far the simplest of all task done on Skylark.
I am not really sure what you could do if you have the wheel other than move the mainsheet traveler to the cabin top and get it off the aft end of the boom completely.
Let me know how it goes.
    Jim
